The are generally three types of scanners:

• Flatbed
• Transparency
• Drum

A low-end color flatbed of acceptable quality can be had for around $500.00 There are transparency backs available for some flatbeds, but they can't do small transparencies. --- Slide scanners by companies such as Nikon®, Epson®, and Polaroid®.

The Nikon CoolScan® is even available to fit a drive slot, no external box.

Drum scanners such as the Crosfield®, Screen®, Hell®, and Isomet® are high-end units in the $ 80,000 range. They have long dynamic range and high-magnifiction capabilities.
